Turkey's opposition under pressure as Istanbul mayor trial drags on

Istanbul: The corruption trial of Istanbul’s jailed mayor, Ekrem İmamoğlu, entered its second month on Thursday, marking what many observers call a major setback for the nation's political opposition. İmamoğlu, a prominent figure from the main opposition CHP party and a key rival to President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, has been detained since March 2025.
Prosecutors have accused İmamoğlu of operating a vast criminal network, seeking a staggering sentence of 2,430 years. İmamoğlu has vehemently denied all charges, labeling the proceedings a ‘political trial’ designed to halt the CHP’s momentum. The mass trial involves over 400 defendants, with 107 still in detention, drawing criticism from legal experts and human rights groups regarding its constitutionality.
The legal pressure has expanded beyond Istanbul; four other CHP mayors have been arrested since the trial began in early March. Most recently, the ruling AKP party gained control of Bursa after its mayor was jailed on similar charges.
With İmamoğlu seen as a primary contender for the 2028 presidential election, supporters and rights watchdogs warn that these ‘arbitrary restrictions’ are aimed at neutralizing threats to the current administration.
