JERUSALEM: Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz has announced that an Israeli air strike killed Alireza Tangsiri, the commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy. The operation, which took place on Wednesday night, reportedly targeted Tangsiri alongside other senior officers of the naval command.

In a video statement released on Thursday, Katz described the commander as the individual “directly responsible for the terrorist operation of mining and blocking the Strait of Hormuz to shipping, concluding that the leader had been blown up and eliminated.”

The loss of Tangsiri is viewed as a significant blow to Iran’s military structure, particularly given his strategic influence over global maritime routes. Before the strike, Tangsiri had issued forceful warnings to both Israel and the United States, specifically threatening the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.

“But if it’s true, it’s going to be another major blow for a country that has already experienced a lot of military commanders being killed,” Katz said.

While Israel has claimed credit for the assassination, there has been no official confirmation of the death from Tehran.
