Kim Jong Un Says Iran War Validates North Korea’s Nuclear Strategy

Pyongyang: North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has said the ongoing conflict involving Iran reinforces his country’s decision to retain its nuclear weapons, calling the policy essential for national security.

Addressing the Supreme People’s Assembly, Kim accused the United States of engaging in “state-sponsored terrorism and aggression,” arguing that recent developments clearly justify Pyongyang’s refusal to abandon its nuclear arsenal. He described North Korea’s nuclear status as “irreversible.”

His remarks come as Donald Trump continues to defend US actions related to Iran, previously claiming Tehran posed an “imminent” threat and asserting that its nuclear capabilities had been “obliterated.”

For North Korea, the conflict underscores a long-standing belief that nations without nuclear weapons remain vulnerable to US military intervention, while those with nuclear capabilities can act as a deterrent.

The comments also come at a sensitive diplomatic moment. Trump has recently indicated openness to resuming talks with Kim, potentially reviving negotiations that broke down in 2019.

Earlier this month, South Korea’s prime minister held an unscheduled meeting with Trump in Washington, where discussions reportedly focused on the possibility of restarting diplomacy with Pyongyang, coordinating strategy, and addressing North Korea’s advancing weapons programmes.

However, Kim’s latest stance signals a shift in tone. While he has expressed willingness to engage in future talks, he has made it clear that any negotiations would require the US to recognise North Korea as a nuclear power and abandon what Pyongyang describes as its “hostile policy.”

Meanwhile, North Korea has continued to demonstrate its military capabilities through a series of high-profile weapons tests, including cruise missile launches from a new warship and volleys of what state media claims are nuclear-capable rockets.
