MOSCOW:  President Vladimir Putin has reaffirmed Russia’s strategic commitment to Iran, describing Moscow as a ‘loyal friend and reliable partner’ in a message sent to the Iranian leadership on Saturday.

The Kremlin confirmed that Putin sent the message to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei and President Masoud Pezeshkian to coincide with the Persian New Year, Nowruz. In his address, the Russian leader expressed his support for the Iranian people as they navigate what he termed ‘harsh trials,’ referring to the ongoing regional conflict involving the United States and Israel.

"Vladimir Putin wished the Iranian people to overcome the harsh trials with dignity and stressed that in this difficult time Moscow remains a loyal friend and reliable partner of Tehran," the official Kremlin statement read.

The message arrives as Tehran faces significant military and economic pressure. Russia has previously condemned the strikes on Iranian territory, with officials stating that the escalation has pushed the region into an ‘abyss.’ Despite the geopolitical tensions, the Kremlin emphasised that the bilateral bond between the two nations remains an ‘unwavering’ priority for Moscow's foreign policy.
