TEHRAN:  Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has asserted that Tehran will not accept a mere ceasefire in its conflict with the United States and Israel, demanding a total and lasting conclusion to hostilities.

In an interview on Friday, Araghchi described the current conflict as a ‘blatant act of aggression’ that was imposed on Iran during active negotiations with Washington. He characterised Iran’s military actions as ‘purely self-defence’ and vowed that the country would continue to defend itself for as long as necessary.

"Our position is, and I must reiterate, that we do not accept a ceasefire because we do not want the scenario of last year to be repeated," Araghchi said, according to a transcript shared on his Telegram account. "The war must be completely and permanently ended, and there must be guarantees that this situation will not be repeated."

Araghchi’s comments signal a hardening of Tehran’s diplomatic position, moving beyond temporary truces to demand a framework that prevents future escalations. The Foreign Minister emphasised that the ‘unjustified and unprovoked’ nature of the attacks necessitates a comprehensive settlement rather than a short-term pause in fighting.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs indicated that these terms are essential to ensuring regional stability and the ‘sovereignty’ of the Iranian state. As international mediators continue to seek a path toward de-escalation, Araghchi’s ‘clear message’ highlights the significant gap remaining between the warring parties.
