A second ship has been struck by an unknown projectile in the Strait of Hormuz, triggering a fire and forcing the crew to evacuate, according to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO).
The maritime agency said the cargo vessel requested assistance after the strike, which caused a blaze on board. The ship was reported to be about 11 nautical miles north of the Musandam Peninsula.
Earlier Wednesday, another container ship reported damage after being hit by a suspected projectile about 25 nautical miles northwest of Ras Al Khaimah. Authorities said all crew members on that vessel were safe.
The Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical maritime chokepoints, normally handles around 100 ships a day transporting oil and other cargo through the Gulf.
The incidents come amid heightened tensions in the region following attacks linked to the ongoing conflict involving Iran, the United States and Israel.
