Beirut: Israeli airstrikes on Lebanon have killed at least 31 people and wounded 149 others, according to Lebanon’s health ministry, as tensions sharply escalated following rocket fire by Hezbollah.
In a statement on Monday, the ministry said Israeli raids on Beirut’s southern suburbs and parts of southern Lebanon resulted in the casualties, describing the toll as preliminary.
The Israeli military said it launched strikes across Lebanon, including the capital, targeting Hezbollah positions after the Iran-backed group fired rockets toward Israel. The military stated the operation was carried out in response to what it described as Hezbollah’s projectile attacks.
Hezbollah claimed responsibility for the rocket and drone fire, saying it was in retaliation and in defence of Lebanon amid ongoing Israeli strikes.
