Trump Urges Continued Iran Nuclear Diplomacy After Netanyahu Talks

Washington: President Donald Trump said he pressed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to keep diplomatic efforts alive with Tehran, insisting that negotiations over Iran’s nuclear programme must continue despite the absence of any formal agreement after their meeting on Wednesday. The leaders met at the White House for over three hours in closed-door discussions, after which Trump took to his Truth Social platform to share his stance.

Trump described the exchange as “very good,” but acknowledged that no conclusive deal was reached during the session. He noted that the central outcome was his insistence on continuing talks with Iran to determine whether a meaningful agreement could be achieved, and said that while a deal would be “preferable,” it remains uncertain how negotiations will unfold.

Netanyahu arrived in Washington aiming to broaden the scope of discussions with Tehran, urging that any deal include restrictions beyond nuclear limits, such as curbs on ballistic missiles and support for regional militias. However, the U.S. leader stuck to the current diplomatic track, focusing primarily on the nuclear aspect and rejecting Netanyahu’s push for expanded conditions at this time.

The latest diplomatic engagement comes on the heels of indirect talks between U.S. and Iranian officials in Oman, which signalled cautious optimism in both capitals about reviving long-stalled negotiations. Trump has reiterated that a deal must eliminate both nuclear weapons capabilities and missile threats, while Iranian leaders have described their willingness to allow international inspections of key facilities.

Despite this diplomatic emphasis, Trump also hinted at the possibility of stronger measures if negotiations falter, referencing past military action against Iranian nuclear sites as an example. The balance between diplomacy and deterrence reflects the complex regional dynamics the U.S. faces, especially as military assets remain bolstered in the Middle East amid ongoing tensions.

Officials from both sides said that, beyond Iran, the meeting touched on broader regional issues, including developments in Gaza and security cooperation between the U.S. and Israel. Although the talks did not produce immediate policy shifts, they reinforced ongoing coordination on shared strategic concerns.
