Manama: Russian authorities have confirmed the arrest and extradition of a suspect accused of attempting to assassinate a senior Russian military official, following his detention in Dubai with the assistance of the United Arab Emirates.

Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) said Russian national Lyubomir Korba was taken into custody and extradited from Dubai hours after fleeing Russia. The arrest was carried out with support from UAE authorities, according to Russia’s state-run TASS news agency.

Korba is accused of ambushing and shooting Lieutenant General Vladimir Alekseyev, Russia’s deputy military intelligence chief, in the stairwell of his Moscow apartment building on Friday. Russian media reported that Alekseyev sustained gunshot wounds to his arm, leg and chest and underwent surgery. His condition was not immediately disclosed.

The FSB said an alleged accomplice was arrested in Moscow, while another suspect, described as a woman, crossed into Ukraine. Authorities added that efforts are ongoing to identify and apprehend those believed to have organised the attack.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said President Vladimir Putin thanked UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan for the cooperation that led to the suspect’s detention.

Russian officials have accused Ukraine of orchestrating the attack, which took place one day after peace talks involving Russian, Ukrainian and United States officials concluded in Abu Dhabi. The talks resulted in a prisoner exchange but did not produce progress toward ending the war in Ukraine.

Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov described the shooting as a “terrorist act” aimed at undermining diplomatic efforts.

The incident follows a series of attacks on senior Russian military figures that Moscow has attributed to Ukraine. In December, a car bomb killed Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov, head of the Operational Training Directorate of Russia’s General Staff.
