Washington: The United States government has launched a new federal website, TrumpRx.gov, designed to help American patients find lower-priced prescription medicines, officials announced this week at the White House.
President Donald Trump unveiled the online platform on Thursday evening in Washington, describing it as a tool that will allow consumers to access discounted medications directly from pharmaceutical companies without the traditional middlemen mark-ups that contribute to the country’s high drug costs.
According to the White House, TrumpRx is launching with price cuts on more than 40 popular brand-name drugs, including widely used treatments for diabetes, obesity and other chronic conditions. Rather than selling medications itself, the site redirects users to manufacturers’ purchasing channels and enables them to generate printable coupons for use at pharmacies.
Under agreements struck by the administration with at least 16 major pharmaceutical firms, prices for some medicines have been set at the same level paid in other developed countries a strategy known as “most-favoured-nation” pricing. Examples highlighted in the official fact sheet include weight-loss drugs such as Ozempic and Wegovy, whose monthly costs are now expected to be significantly lower than their traditional U.S. list prices.
Administration officials, including Centres for Medicare & Medicaid Services chief Dr. Mehmet Oz, promoted the initiative as a way to ease the growing burden of healthcare costs for many Americans. Trump portrayed the launch as part of a broader effort to ensure U.S. patients stop shouldering higher drug prices than citizens of other wealthy nations.
The launch of TrumpRx comes amid ongoing political debate over healthcare affordability as the country prepares for key elections later this year.
