Beijing : Chinese President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Donald Trump held a telephone conversation on Wednesday that came just hours after Xi concluded a separate call with Russian President Vladimir Putin, according to official state media.

The phone call between Xi and Trump the first direct conversation reported by Chinese media since November underscored a continued diplomatic engagement between the world’s two largest economies following recent high-level exchanges with Russia.

Chinese state broadcaster CCTV acknowledged the call but offered few details about its substance. Trump, however, took to social media to describe the dialogue as “excellent,” noting that the leaders discussed a wide array of issues. Topics reportedly included trade, Taiwan, energy, agriculture and broader geopolitical matters, including the war in Ukraine and tensions involving Iran.

According to U.S. accounts, one significant point of discussion was the prospect of China increasing purchases of U.S. soybeans and other agricultural products a matter of particular interest to American farmers and a component of efforts to ease bilateral economic tensions.
