Abu Dhabi: Amazon has launched a major new initiative aimed at expanding access to Arabic literature worldwide with the debut of its Digital Arabic Library a dedicated online collection featuring more than 38,000 Arabic-language titles in digital formats.
The project, developed in collaboration with the Abu Dhabi Arabic Language Centre (ALC), makes a vast catalogue of content available through Amazon’s Kindle eBook store and Audible audiobook platform. Of the total collection, over 33,000 Kindle eBooks and 5,000 audiobooks are accessible, with at least 1,000 titles offered for free to readers.
The Digital Arabic Library is designed to help address the relative scarcity of Arabic content in the digital landscape a gap Northern Hemisphere tech companies and local cultural organisations have long sought to bridge. Despite being spoken by hundreds of millions of people across the Middle East, North Africa and worldwide, Arabic literature has historically been underrepresented online compared with English and other major languages.
Books in the collection span a wide variety of genres, giving readers options from history and science to fiction and memoir. Classic works by noted authors sit alongside contemporary bestsellers, offering both cultural heritage and modern voices in one curated destination.
His Excellency Dr. Ali bin Tamim, Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Arabic Language Centre, said the initiative opens up new channels for global readers to engage with Arabic culture and literature. Amazon’s vice president for the Middle East, Africa and Turkey, Ronaldo Mouchawar, described the library as a seamless platform for discovering titles, celebrating Arabic culture while also supporting local authors and publishers.
The digital storefront features traditional Arabic calligraphy and user reviews to help readers find books that resonate with them. Amazon will continue to work with regional publishers to grow the collection over the coming years, expanding access to Arabic literary works for audiences around the globe.
The Digital Arabic Library is accessible now via Amazon’s website and represents a significant step in bringing more Arabic content into the global digital book market.
