Tehran: Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian issued a stark warning on Sunday that any attack on Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei would be treated as a declaration of war against the Iranian nation, in comments reflecting mounting tensions with the United States.
In a post on the social media platform X, Pezeshkian said that an assault on the country’s highest authority would amount to “a full-scale war with the Iranian nation,” a message widely seen as a response to remarks by U.S. President Donald Trump, who recently suggested it was time for new leadership in Iran.
The Iranian leader also blamed longstanding U.S. sanctions and hostility for the economic hardships facing ordinary Iranians, asserting that such measures have contributed to the nation’s difficulties. Pezeshkian’s statement followed inflammatory rhetoric between Tehran and Washington, with both sides trading criticisms over national policies and protest-related unrest.
The warning comes amid broader regional and domestic tensions, with Iran experiencing widespread protests over economic conditions and political grievances. Officials in Tehran view any external military action against their leadership as a profound affront that could escalate into all-out conflict.
