Iran Accuses US, Israel at UN of Fueling Violence in Nationwide Protests

United Nations: Iran has sharply condemned the United States and Israel at the United Nations, accusing both governments of fomenting violence and turning peaceful demonstrations into deadly unrest inside Iran.

In a letter and formal remarks to UN Secretary-General António Guterres and the UN Security Council, Iran’s representatives asserted that what began as peaceful protests over economic grievances was deliberately exploited and exploited by foreign powers and “terrorist elements” allegedly linked to Washington and Jerusalem. Tehran said this interference was directly responsible for the escalation of violence and the loss of life.

Iran’s foreign ministry cited Daesh-like acts including beheadings, burning victims alive, and attacks on law enforcement to underscore its claims that peaceful protests were hijacked by hostile forces. The letter accused the United States of exploiting the unrest and urged the United Nations to “unequivocally condemn” what Tehran described as provocative interference and violations of international law.

The accusations came amid an emergency UN Security Council session on Iran’s deadly protests, convened at the request of the United States, where diplomats and human rights advocates sounded alarms about lethal crackdowns and escalating loss of life.

Iran’s stance reflects a broader trend in Tehran of blaming external actors for internal unrest. Iranian officials including President Masoud Pezeshkian have publicly accused the United States and Israel of stirring instability and inciting violence inside Iran.

The protests, which erupted in late December over economic hardship, have since become some of the most significant in years and have drawn widespread international attention due to reports of heavy security force responses and high casualty figures.

U.S. diplomats at the United Nations rejected Tehran’s allegations as unfounded, with a State Department spokesperson characterizing the claims as an attempt to divert attention from the Iranian government’s own repression of dissent. The U.S. delegation reiterated calls for respect for human rights and restraint by Iranian authorities.

Global human rights organizations and UN officials have warned of widespread abuses and urged Iran to uphold international standards on peaceful protest and free expression.

The sharp exchange at the United Nations underscores the deepening diplomatic and geopolitical tensions between Iran and its Western adversaries, especially as domestic unrest continues and international scrutiny intensifies.
