After Maduro Op, Trump Eyes Action Against Mexico’s Cartels
Washington: After the US operation that captured Nicolás Maduro, President Donald Trump said Washington is now preparing land strikes against Mexico’s drug cartels. He claimed US maritime operations were successful and accused cartels of effectively running Mexico and driving violence in the US.
"We are going to start now hitting land with regard to the cartels. The cartels are running Mexico. It's very, very sad to watch and see what's happened to that country, but the cartels are running, and they're killing 250,000 to 300,000 people in our country every single year," the 79-year-old Republican told during an interview with the media.
Trump said he has pushed Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum to allow US troops to intervene, an offer she rejected, warning against foreign intervention. Analysts caution that any US land action in Mexico could spark serious diplomatic fallout and regional instability.
