U.S. Seizes Two “Ghost Fleet” Tankers After Weeks-Long Pursuit

The United States has seized two oil tanker ships linked to Venezuela, including a Russian-flagged vessel, following a carefully planned operation that took place over several weeks.

According to U.S. officials, the Coast Guard carried out two pre-dawn operations, boarding the tankers in separate locations — one in the North Atlantic Ocean and the other in international waters near the Caribbean.

The two vessels, identified as Motor Tanker Bella I and Motor Tanker Sophia, were either last docked in Venezuela or were heading toward the country.

Officials said Bella I had attempted to evade authorities for weeks. During the pursuit, the ship reportedly changed its flag and repainted its name in an effort to avoid capture. These attempts were unsuccessful.

The U.S. Coast Guard vessel USCGC Munro tracked and followed the tanker across rough seas and severe weather before finally boarding it. Authorities praised the crew for their persistence and professionalism during the operation.

U.S. officials said the seizures are part of ongoing efforts to enforce sanctions and prevent illegal oil shipments through so-called “ghost fleet” vessels.
