United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk has welcomed US President Donald Trump’s newly announced Gaza peace plan, calling it a “vital opportunity” to bring a lasting end to nearly two years of devastating conflict in the Palestinian territory.

The plan, unveiled amid mounting international pressure to end hostilities, urges Israel to halt its military operations in the Gaza Strip while the Palestinian group Hamas has expressed readiness to release all hostages and begin talks centered around Trump’s proposal.

In a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter), Türk said he hopes the momentum from the US initiative will “pave the way for a permanent cessation of hostilities, followed by recovery and reconstruction.” He stressed that any resolution must align with international human rights and humanitarian laws and revive the long-sought two-state solution.

“This is a vital opportunity for all parties and influential states to act in good faith — to stop, once and for all, the carnage and suffering in Gaza,” Türk said. “Humanitarian aid must flow freely, and both the hostages and detained Palestinians must be released.”

The proposal reportedly outlines a phased Israeli withdrawal from Gaza alongside the gradual disarmament of Hamas, with international monitoring to ensure compliance.

The World Health Organization (WHO) also voiced its support, particularly welcoming the plan’s focus on rebuilding Gaza’s healthcare infrastructure. “The best medicine is peace,” WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus wrote on X.

Meanwhile, Hamas has signaled its willingness to engage in peace negotiations for the first time since the war began, raising cautious optimism among mediators.

However, Israel stated on Saturday that its forces were still conducting operations in Gaza City and warned residents not to return, despite growing domestic and international calls — including from President Trump — for an immediate ceasefire.
