A man deliberately drove his car into a crowd outside a wine bar in northern France early Saturday, killing one person and injuring five others, two of them critically, prosecutors said.

The incident occurred around 4:00 a.m. local time in the town of Evreux, Normandy. Prosecutors confirmed they have opened an investigation into homicide and attempted homicide, and said there is no indication of terrorist or racist motives.

According to Evreux public prosecutor Remi Coutin, the violence began after an argument between a young woman and several men inside the bar. Bouncers escorted patrons outside, where the situation escalated.

“One person went to fetch a vehicle and deliberately reversed at high speed into the crowd,” Coutin said, calling the incident a “terrible tragedy.”

The driver, two men, and a woman have been taken into custody, with authorities saying more arrests are possible.

Mayor Guy Lefrand expressed his sympathy for the victims and praised the quick response of police and emergency services. He also noted that the bar, which should have closed at 1 a.m., has a “bad reputation.”

Police reported that many people in the crowd were under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident.
