King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Centre (KFSHRC) has solidified its position as a regional and global leader in epilepsy surgery, performing more than 2,000 successful procedures for patients with drug-resistant epilepsy.

The hospital’s Epilepsy Centre, one of the busiest in the world, now conducts 1 to 2 advanced Stereo-Electroencephalography (Stereo-EEG) procedures each week. This minimally invasive technique, introduced over the past two years, helps doctors pinpoint seizure sources more precisely while reducing risks associated with traditional surgery.

Since its establishment in 1993, the Epilepsy Centre has treated over 4,000 patients and performed life-changing surgeries for those who do not respond to medication. Stereo-EEG uses ultra-thin electrodes inserted through tiny openings in the skull, allowing doctors to map seizures accurately. This approach supports tailored treatments such as targeted brain resections or neurostimulation implants, helping many patients regain independence and improve their quality of life.

Beyond medical benefits, the technique also reduces long-term healthcare costs by lowering dependence on anti-seizure medications, while helping patients return to work faster and regain daily function.

Globally, epilepsy affects around 50 million people, and about 30% of patients do not respond to medication, making surgery the only option to restore normal life, according to the World Health Organization.

KFSHRC’s success reflects its commitment to advanced neurosciences and innovative care. The hospital has been ranked first in the Middle East and North Africa and 15th globally among the world’s top 250 Academic Medical Centres for the second consecutive year. It is also recognized as the most valuable healthcare brand in the region and was included in Newsweek’s 2025 list of the World’s Best Smart Hospitals.

This achievement highlights KFSHRC’s growing influence in specialized healthcare and its role in providing world-class solutions for complex neurological conditions.
