Prominent Telugu journalist and TV anchor Swetcha Votarkar was found dead at her residence in Hyderabad on Friday night in a suspected case of suicide, according to Indian media reports. She was 40 years old.

Police confirmed that Swetcha was discovered hanging from a ceiling fan. A case has been registered, and an investigation is currently underway. Authorities are treating the death as suspicious following a complaint filed by her father, who alleged that a specific individual may have been responsible for driving her to take her own life.

Swetcha Votarkar was a well-known journalist, writer, and social activist, widely respected for her fearless reporting and vocal stance on socio-political issues, particularly those affecting Telangana. Her sudden death has triggered an outpouring of grief and calls for justice from fellow journalists, activists, and the public.

BRS (Bharat Rashtra Samithi) Working President K.T. Rama Rao expressed his condolences on social media, describing Swetcha as “a fierce journalist, writer and a dedicated Telanganite.” He also used the moment to urge those battling mental health challenges to seek help, stressing that support is always available.

Calls for a thorough investigation have also emerged from human rights groups and political activists. Many are urging authorities to probe the circumstances around her death and take action against anyone found responsible.

Swetcha’s passing has sent shockwaves through India’s media and activist circles, with many demanding justice and greater mental health awareness in high-stress professions such as journalism.
