Pope Francis’ respiratory infection has developed into a “complex clinical picture” requiring further hospitalization, the Vatican announced on Monday.
Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni stated that recent tests indicate the 88-year-old pontiff is suffering from a “polymicrobial respiratory tract infection,” necessitating adjustments to his drug therapy. While no specific timeframe for his hospital stay was provided, Bruni emphasized that the complexity of his symptoms requires continued medical care.
As the pope spent his fourth day at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital, concerns grew over his upcoming commitments. Despite his illness, Francis reportedly had breakfast and read newspapers Monday morning while continuing his prescribed treatments. A more detailed medical update was expected later in the day.
The pope was admitted to the hospital on Friday in "fair" condition after a prolonged bout of bronchitis worsened. Doctors diagnosed a respiratory tract infection and prescribed “absolute rest” alongside medication. Earlier updates suggested his fever had subsided and that his condition remained stable.
Francis, who had part of one lung removed due to a pulmonary infection in his youth, has maintained a rigorous schedule despite his fragile health. His work ethic was evident even during this latest illness, as he insisted on completing his Friday morning audiences before heading to the hospital, despite struggling with shortness of breath.
In 2023, the pope was hospitalized for three days due to pneumonia but only later revealed that he had been admitted urgently after experiencing severe chest pain and dizziness. This time, his prolonged stay signals a more serious health challenge, raising questions about his immediate engagements and ability to maintain his demanding schedule.
