A magnitude 4.0 earthquake struck India’s capital, New Delhi, early Monday morning, sending tremors through the city and prompting residents to rush outdoors in fear. The quake, which occurred an hour before dawn, had its epicentre on the edge of the sprawling metropolis, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS).

Despite the intensity of the tremors, there were no immediate reports of major damage or casualties. However, the shaking was strong enough to rattle buildings and awaken many in the densely populated city. Witnesses described scenes of panic as people ran out of their homes seeking safety.

“We hope you all are safe, Delhi,” the city’s police force posted on social media, while also issuing an emergency contact number for assistance.

According to the USGS, the earthquake struck at a shallow depth of 10 kilometres (6 miles), amplifying its impact across the region. The tremors were also reportedly felt in neighbouring areas, heightening concerns among residents.

New Delhi and northern India lie along a major geological fault line where the Indian tectonic plate pushes into the Eurasian plate, a process that continues to form the towering Himalayas. Due to this tectonic activity, the region frequently experiences earthquakes, some of which have had devastating consequences in the past.

Authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant and follow safety protocols in the event of aftershocks. Meanwhile, disaster response teams are monitoring the situation to assess any structural damages.

This incident serves as a reminder of the seismic vulnerability of the region and the importance of earthquake preparedness measures for residents and authorities alike.
