Emirates has made a significant contribution to support the blind and visually impaired community in the UK by donating over 12,000 First Class eye masks to various schools, sensory services, and vision support centres. The donation is part of the airline's ongoing commitment to repurpose waste and connect with local communities.
The initiative was inspired by Tracy Pearce, an outreach teacher at Sight Scotland based at the Royal Blind School in Edinburgh, who reached out to Emirates with a request for eye masks. Pearce, who works with visually impaired children and trains teaching staff in Scotland, saw the eye masks as a valuable tool to help simulate the challenges faced by those with visual impairments.
In her heartfelt request, Pearce explained how the school uses eye shades during training to allow teachers and support staff to experience firsthand what it's like to navigate daily tasks without vision. The goal is to foster empathy and understanding among educators, helping them better support young people with visual impairments.
In response, Emirates' PR and CSR team not only fulfilled Pearce's request but also encouraged her to connect with her network of educators across the UK. Within days, more than 80 teachers from across the country expressed interest in using the eye masks in their own training programs. By November, 12,250 eye masks had been distributed to a wide range of organisations, including Guide Dogs for the Blind, Learning and Inclusion Centres, and Habilitation services.
“These eye shades provide invaluable insight into the realities of living with a visual impairment,” said Pearce. “They are a crucial tool in our training sessions, allowing participants to experience firsthand the challenges faced by those with sight loss. We’re grateful to Emirates for their generous donation, which will make a significant difference in our ability to teach with empathy and expertise.”
This donation not only highlights Emirates' dedication to sustainability by repurposing waste but also reflects the airline's commitment to creating a positive social impact by supporting vulnerable communities across the UK.
