The United Nations Special Envoy for Syria, Mr. Geir O. Pedersen, has been actively engaging with both the caretaker authorities and a diverse group of Syrian representatives over the past few weeks, closely monitoring developments within the country.
During his visit, Mr. Pedersen held important meetings, including one with Mr. Ahmed al-Sharaa on January 20, followed by two follow-up sessions with the caretaker Foreign Minister, Mr. Asaad al-Shibani. He expressed appreciation for the substantive dialogue that has unfolded during these exchanges.
The Special Envoy also met with a wide spectrum of Syrian individuals and groups, spanning various political, religious, and community backgrounds. He expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to hear the perspectives of those involved in Syria’s complex political landscape, particularly during such a critical time for the nation.
One of the central themes that emerged from these discussions was the unanimous conviction among Syrians that the political transition is crucial to the future of the country. According to Mr. Pedersen, all individuals he engaged with stressed that Syria’s transition cannot afford to fail. The protection and inclusion of all Syrians in shaping the nation’s future were consistently highlighted as fundamental principles.
Mr. Pedersen welcomed the repeated assurances from the caretaker leadership regarding the creation of an inclusive Syria that is built on solid, credible foundations, and he noted a genuine alignment between the expectations of the Syrian people, the commitments of the caretaker authorities, and the key principles outlined in United Nations Security Council Resolution 2254 (2015).
In closing, Mr. Pedersen emphasized his appreciation for the willingness of the caretaker leadership to closely cooperate with the United Nations on the steps toward a Syrian-led and Syrian-owned transition. He pledged to continue monitoring the political developments and the situation on the ground, providing updates to the UN Secretary-General and the Security Council as part of his ongoing mandate.
