The Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) – Medical University of Bahrain has launched its Student Health Ambassadors (SHA) programme, an initiative designed to promote positive health and wellbeing and foster a healthy campus environment for all students in line with the World Health Organization (WHO) Healthy University framework.
In accordance with WHO indicators, trained Student Health Ambassadors will actively engage with students in their year group to promote health and safety, raise awareness of healthy lifestyles and contribute to initiatives that embed wellbeing into the University environment.
Student Health Ambassadors are selected through an open and competitive application process, where candidates are assessed on their knowledge and relevant experience in health and wellbeing initiatives, as well as the personal qualities essential to the role, including professionalism, approachability, cultural awareness and a strong commitment to upholding the Student Code of Conduct.
Dr Wendy Maddison, Head of Student Development and Wellbeing at RCSI Medical University of Bahrain, stated: “The launch of the Student Health Ambassadors programme at RCSI Medical University of Bahrain represents an important step in strengthening our holistic approach to student wellbeing and shaping future global healthcare practitioners. The launch of this programme reinforces our commitment to a comprehensive wellbeing framework that supports student success and prepares them in their future role as compassionate and resilient healthcare professionals.”
Eleven Student Health Ambassadors have been selected, with one student appointed from each year of study in the School of Medicine and the School of Nursing and Midwifery, ensuring broad representation and accessible peer support across the University.
Ms Isra Yaser, Nursing Year 4 student and Student Health Ambassador, shared her perspective, stating: “I was motivated to join the Student Health Ambassadors Programme because I believe in promoting a culture of wellbeing and supporting my peers as they navigate their academic journey. Through my role as an SHA, I hope to raise awareness of available services, encourage students to prioritise their wellbeing and help create an environment where every student feels heard, supported and empowered to thrive.”
Student Health Ambassador Ms Eman Alqayem, who is a final year medical student, said: “I understand the different challenges that students face throughout their academic journey as future nurses and doctors. Through my role as an SHA, I aim to contribute to a more supportive, open and connected student community at RCSI Medical University of Bahrain.”
The Student Health Ambassadors programme forms part of RCSI Medical University of Bahrain’s strategic approach to providing an enriched student experience, with an emphasis on personal growth and professional development, and recognising wellbeing and resilience as critical enablers of healthcare leadership.
