Maharaja goes Hollywood

Vijay Sethupathi's 2024 Tamil crime thriller Maharaja is officially heading for a Hollywood remake, marking a significant milestone for Tamil cinema's growing international reach.

The remake was confirmed by producer Sudhan Sundaram, as well as the film's original producers. However, the identity of the Hollywood studio and the final cast have yet to be officially announced.

Speaking to The Times of India, Sundaram said interest in the remake followed the film's strong performance in China, where it reportedly earned ₹91.65 crore at the box office. Its performance on streaming platforms also helped attract attention from a Hollywood agency, which subsequently approached the producers for the remake rights.

According to Sundaram, the agency is currently working to develop the project around an A-list Hollywood actor, with production potentially beginning next year.

Speculation has linked Oscar-winning actor Matthew McConaughey to the lead role. Asked about the possibility, Sundaram remained cautious, saying McConaughey could be among the actors being approached but that the agency would have to confirm the casting.

Directed by Nithilan Saminathan, Maharaja follows a barber who visits a police station to report a missing dustbin named Lakshmi. What initially appears to be an unusual complaint gradually unfolds into a much darker story, with the film gaining attention for its nonlinear narrative and path.

The film starred Vijay Sethupathi, Anurag Kashyap, Mamta Mohandas, Natty Subramaniam and Sachana Namidass. Produced by The Route, Think Studios and Passion Studios, Maharaja's journey from a Tamil-language crime thriller to a potential Hollywood adaptation highlights the increasing international interest in Indian cinema.
