Kaspersky warns of fake streaming sites targeting fans with promises of free access

The global excitement surrounding Christopher Nolan’s new Odyssey movie is being exploited by cybercriminals. Kaspersky experts warn of a growing wave of scam websites targeting fans worldwide.

The cybersecurity company identified fraudulent websites in multiple languages, indicating that scammers are deliberately targeting audiences in different countries.

The scams typically promise users free access to the newly released film, often offering dubbed versions in local languages. Fake reviews and ratings are also displayed to make the websites appear legitimate.

When users attempt to watch the movie, they see a fake video player and are asked to register to continue watching. The registration process can request personal details, including names and email addresses, followed by passwords and banking information under the pretext of activating a free trial.

Kaspersky warned that providing such information could expose users to credential theft and financial losses, particularly when passwords are reused across different services.

Olga Altukhova, Senior Web Content Analyst at Kaspersky, urged users to be cautious when newly released films appear on unfamiliar streaming platforms, advising them to use official services and verify website addresses before entering personal or financial information.

Kaspersky also recommends using multi-factor authentication, monitoring financial accounts for suspicious activity and using reliable security software to help detect phishing and malicious links.
