Online gaming platform Roblox has launched two new account types for younger users worldwide, introducing stricter safety measures, expanded parental controls, and age-based access to games and communication features.
The new system, known as Roblox Kids and Roblox Select, is designed to provide age-appropriate experiences for users under 16 while giving parents greater oversight of their children's activity on the platform.
The rollout follows pilot programmes in several countries and is now being introduced globally. Roblox said the changes are aimed at creating a safer environment for younger players by aligning game access, content ratings, and communication tools with a user’s age.
Age-Based Experiences
Roblox Kids accounts are intended for children aged five to eight and include the platform’s highest level of default protection. Users in this age group will have access only to games that meet strict content standards, while chat features will be disabled by default.
Roblox Select accounts are designed for users aged nine to 15. These accounts will provide access to a broader range of approved games, with communication features and safety settings varying according to age and local regulations.
The company said all games available through these account categories will undergo additional reviews, including developer verification and enhanced content checks, before being made accessible to younger users.
Stronger Parental Controls
As part of the update, Roblox is expanding parental control options for linked family accounts. Parents will be able to monitor gameplay activity, manage communication settings, set screen-time limits, control spending, and block specific games.
A new approval feature will also allow parents to grant access to selected games that fall outside their child’s default account settings.
Roblox said these tools are designed to help families stay involved in their children's online experiences while maintaining appropriate safety safeguards.
Accounts Will Adjust Automatically
The platform’s new system will automatically transition users into different account categories as they grow older. Children will move from Roblox Kids to Roblox Select at age nine and then to a standard Roblox account when they turn 16.
According to the company, the approach reflects the changing needs of young users and allows safety measures to evolve alongside their age and maturity.
Additional Safety Measures
Roblox is also strengthening its age-verification requirements. Users who do not complete age checks will not be able to access standard account features or certain communication tools.
The company confirmed that restrictions on sharing external links, images, and videos through chat will remain in place. Additional limitations on social media link sharing for users under 16 are expected to be introduced later this month.
Roblox described the update as one of its most significant child-safety initiatives to date, bringing together age verification, content ratings, parental controls, and moderation tools within a single framework.
The company also announced plans to adopt the International Age Rating Coalition system later this year, providing globally recognised content ratings for games and digital experiences available on the platform.
