UAE’s ADFD Signs AED 376 Million Deal to Finance Tajikistan’s Rogun
Highlighting the United Arab Emirates’ growing global development footprint and leadership in sustainable development, the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD) has signed a loan agreement with the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan to finance the Rogun Hydroelectric Power Station. The announcement was made during the World Government Summit.
The AED 376 million project is a strategic initiative designed to strengthen energy security and enhance water resilience. It falls under the Abu Dhabi Global Water Platform, launched by ADFD just one month ago.
The agreement was signed by H.E. Mohammed Saif Al Suwaidi, Director General of ADFD, and H.E. Faiziddin Qahhorzoda, Minister of Finance of Tajikistan, in the presence of senior officials from both countries. The deal reflects ADFD’s commitment to innovative and sustainable financing solutions that tackle global challenges in energy and water, while supporting the development priorities of partner nations.
H.E. Mohammed Saif Al Suwaidi said: “This agreement with our partners in Tajikistan reaffirms ADFD’s strategic role in supporting global prosperity and advancing sustainable development. It reflects our ongoing commitment to the Abu Dhabi Global Water Platform and our vision of addressing water-related challenges as a key international priority for a sustainable future.”
He added that the Rogun Hydroelectric Power Station will provide sustainable, reliable, and affordable electricity to meet growing demand. The project also includes the creation of significant water storage capacity, helping to integrate regional electricity markets and store approximately one billion cubic metres of water for power generation, irrigation, and drinking water. Its benefits are expected to extend beyond Tajikistan to the wider Central Asia region.
H.E. Faiziddin Qahhorzoda expressed gratitude to the UAE, saying: “We sincerely appreciate the UAE’s leadership and ongoing support for the development goals of partner countries. ADFD’s development-oriented approach strengthens sustainable development foundations through high-impact projects that drive progress and prosperity worldwide.”
He added that the Rogun project, located at an elevation of 1,185 metres, is strategically important for resource sustainability, decarbonising electricity grids in Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, and enhancing energy and water security across Central Asia.
ADFD continues to lead financing of strategic projects in vital sectors, reflecting the UAE’s commitment to comprehensive development and building a sustainable, prosperous future for generations to come.
