InterContinental Maldives Maamunagau Resort Announces 2026 Manta Retreat
Following years of remarkable success, InterContinental Maldives Maamunagau Resort has announced the dates for its 2026 Manta Retreat. Scheduled from 24–27 March 2026, the retreat coincides with the Maamunagau manta season, when young manta rays gather in the resort’s lagoon just steps from the shore.
In partnership with global manta ray conservation leader The Manta Trust, the retreat offers guests a rare opportunity to experience life as a marine biologist. The initiative is aimed at travellers seeking more than a traditional Maldivian holiday—those who value purpose-driven experiences and wish to learn about manta rays in their natural habitat.
Guests will take part in a range of activities, including guided reef snorkelling, manta excursions led by The Manta Trust, coral restoration and planting workshops, and educational sessions. Participants can even adopt and name a manta, gaining an up-close understanding of the creatures and the conservation work dedicated to protecting them.
Since 2019, The Manta Trust has collaborated with the resort to provide these immersive experiences. Meral Hafeez, base leader of The Manta Trust, will lead the retreat, guiding guests through daily research activities such as observing and recording manta ray behaviour. “No matter how many times I encounter these animals, each interaction feels like the first—the sense of awe never diminishes,” Hafeez commented. “I can’t wait for everyone to see their first manta ray and explore the wonders of the deep.”
In 2023, Maamunagau Lagoon was recognised as an Important Shark and Ray Area (ISRA), highlighting its significance as a key habitat for manta rays and a priority for conservation. Certified divers can also explore dedicated dive sites around the resort, including manta ray ‘cleaning stations’ where the symbiotic relationships of marine life can be observed.
After the retreat, guests can unwind in the resort’s overwater villas, enjoy treatments at AVI Spa, or dine at its acclaimed restaurants, making the Manta Retreat a perfect blend of adventure, education, and luxury.
