Sony’s latest addition to the Anaconda franchise arrives not as a straight-laced horror revival, but as a reboot with a refreshing and unexpected tone. Blending adventure, comedy, and nostalgia, the film reimagines the cult classic with a light-hearted, self-aware approach that leans heavily into humor while still paying tribute to the original.
Leading the charge is Jack Black, who delivers one of his trademark performances with charm and comic warmth. He plays a wedding filmmaker who, years after abandoning his childhood dream of becoming an Oscar-winning director, finds himself stuck in a creative rut. His life takes a turn when an unlikely opportunity presents itself: a chance to remake Anaconda. Enter Paul Rudd, portraying a struggling actor and Black’s childhood friend, whose impeccable comic timing and easy chemistry elevate the film’s buddy-dynamic at its core.
The plot itself is intentionally uncomplicated, embracing a “film-within-a-film” concept that doesn’t take itself too seriously. This simplicity works in the movie’s favor, allowing the humor, performances, and visual spectacle to take center stage rather than overcomplicating the narrative.
Visually, the reboot impresses with its cinematography. Sweeping shots of the Amazon rainforest and its meandering rivers add scale and atmosphere, grounding the comedy in a lush, adventurous setting. The jungle is not just a backdrop but an integral part of the experience, echoing the spirit of the original while benefiting from modern filmmaking techniques.
Selton Mello stands out as an anaconda expert, bringing an entertaining level of eccentricity to the role. His portrayal strikes the right balance between over-the-top and believable, adding another layer of fun to the ensemble cast.
Longtime fans of the franchise will appreciate the nostalgic nods, including brief cameos from Ice Cube and Jennifer Lopez, which serve as a respectful wink to the 1997 original without overshadowing the new story.
Overall, Anaconda succeeds as a reboot by knowing exactly what it wants to be: a fun, family-friendly adventure that doesn’t shy away from humor. While it may not aim to redefine the genre, it delivers an entertaining ride that honours the original franchise while confidently carving out its own identity.
The film releases in theatres on December 25 at Epix Liwan Cinema, making it a timely festive watch for audiences looking for a light-hearted adventure on the big screen.
