Arnold Schwarzenegger says he “fell in love with America” as a child.
The 77-year-old actor, who was born and raised in Austria, developed a fascination with the United States during his early years — a fascination that would shape the course of his life.
Speaking to The Wall Street Journal, Schwarzenegger said:
“At age ten, I fell in love with America. That came from watching film rolls in school. The teacher would advance the strips by turning a knob, showing one image at a time. I was blown away.”
He recalled being mesmerized by visuals of the Empire State Building, the Golden Gate Bridge, and classic American cars speeding down six-lane highways.
“All of it was over the top,” he added.
From that young age, Schwarzenegger dreamed of being in the U.S. and living the American dream. While his initial fame came from bodybuilding, his ultimate goal was to break into Hollywood.
“I’d never seen anything like it — the glamor, the lights, the houses,” he recalled.
“I said to myself, ‘What am I doing here?’ I wanted to be in America and to become famous and rich.”
Although he achieved global success as a bodybuilder, his passion for film and stardom never waned.
“All of my time was spent in this world of physical fitness, building up muscles to compete in contests and fantasising about movie stardom.”
Earlier this year, Schwarzenegger revealed that he was initially discouraged from chasing success in Hollywood — but his persistence paid off, and he went on to become one of the most iconic action stars of all time.
