John Legend is saddened by the “devolution” of Kanye West.
The ‘All of Me’ singer was once close friends with the ‘Gold Digger’ hitmaker but their bond has cooled during the past few years after the rapper’s bizarre behaviour and controversial statements caused points of conflict in their relationship.
John told The Times newspaper: “I think he was very different back then. We were both very idealistic and had big dreams, and we shared a lot of the same goals.”
“He had so much optimism. It does seem, and I don’t want to characterise him too much, it seems he’s lost some of that optimism.”
Legend – whose relationship with West’s now-ex-wife Kim Kardashian was once so close that he and wife Chrissy Teigen used to go on double dates with them – doesn’t understand how the ‘Jesus Walks’ rapper could turn into someone so unrecognisable.
He said: “He’s definitely said things that are pretty inexcusable, and that’s why I’ve distanced myself from him.”
“But I also know that he’s not the whole of who he is. He’s not just the sum of the things he says in public.”
“He’s also been very open about his struggles with mental health, and I think that’s something we should take seriously.”
