The Scottish Premiership title will be decided on the final day of the season, with Celtic set to host Hearts in a winner-takes-all clash at Celtic Park tomorrow at 2:30pm (Bahrain time).
Hearts head to Glasgow holding a one-point lead over the defending champions, knowing a victory would secure a first league title in 66 years. Even a draw would be enough to end Celtic’s dominance and complete one of the most remarkable title wins in Scottish football history.
Midweek results kept the tension at boiling point. Hearts maintained their position at the summit with a composed 3–0 win over Falkirk, before Celtic responded in stunning fashion, edging past Motherwell 3–2 in a match that swung deep into stoppage time.
The decisive moment arrived in controversial circumstances when VAR intervened to award Celtic a 99th-minute penalty for a handball following a long throw into the box. Kyogo Furuhashi held his nerve from the spot, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way and lifting the atmosphere inside Celtic Park as the champions forced the race to the final weekend.
Hearts manager Derek McInnes was left frustrated by the late call, describing the decision as “disgusting” and questioning its consistency.
“There were two more shouts for a penalty kick in our game at Motherwell,” he said. “If I’m Motherwell, I’m really disappointed with that having seen it again. I think it’s so poor that they’ve been given that penalty.”
Celtic remain on course for a fifth consecutive league title and a 56th championship overall, with the added incentive of a domestic double after reaching the Scottish Cup final.
Hearts, however, travel south with confidence from their recent meetings with Celtic, having taken seven points from three encounters this season and already proving they can compete with the champions across the campaign.
