Bahrain Victorious returned to the Belgian cobbled classics yesterday with high hopes for the newly renamed “In Flanders Fields”, formerly “Gent–Wevelgem”, but the team’s leaders missed the podium in a 241 km race from Middelkerke to Wevelgem.

Team leader Alec Segaert was active in the closing stages, bridging to the late break by Mathieu van der Poel and Wout van Aert and launching a solo attack inside the final kilometre. Despite his bold move, the chasing peloton, led by sprint-focused teams, reeled him back, setting up the first bunch sprint finish at this race since 2019.

Co-leader Matej Mohorič stayed attentive across the cobbled climbs and gravel sectors, supporting Bahrain Victorious’ efforts, while debutants Borgo, Skerl, Stockwell, and Pau Miquel gained valuable experience in one of the season’s key one-day races.

The sprint saw Belgian Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Premier Tech) take victory, with Dane Tobias Lund Andresen (Decathlon CMA CGM) second and Christophe Laporte (Visma-Lease a Bike) third, capping a dramatic finale for the sprinting teams.
