Bahrain’s wrestling star made his long-awaited return from injury with a flawless gold-medal performance at the 2025 Grand Prix of Spain, headlining a five-medal haul for the Kingdom in Madrid on Saturday evening.

This was Tazhudinov’s first competition since undergoing shoulder surgery following the Paris 2024 Olympics, and his first action in nearly a year. But the reigning world and Olympic champion didn’t miss a beat.

He opened his 97kg campaign with a 10–0 win over Kazakhstan’s Khamzat Tsurov. In the semis, he overpowered Canada’s Nishan Randhawa 13–2. Then, in the final, he pinned Agdzha (competing for Germany) to complete a statement return and claim yet another gold.

His next test comes in Hungary from July 17 to 20, where a deeper field awaits.

But Tazhudinov wasn’t the only Bahrain wrestler making headlines. Shamil Sharipov clinched gold in the 125kg division, while Khidir Saipudinov (79kg) and Magomedrasul Asluev (74kg) also topped the podium. Alibeg Alibegov added a bronze in the 65kg class to complete Bahrain’s medal tally.
