India vice-captain Shubman Gill emphasized that, despite the highly anticipated nature of the upcoming match against Pakistan in the Champions Trophy, for his team, it’s business as usual.
The arch-rivals are set to meet in Dubai on Sunday, with the clash expected to draw a packed stadium, as the two teams only compete in multi-nation events due to political tensions. India had opted out of traveling to Pakistan for the tournament, playing all their matches at the 25,000-capacity Dubai International Stadium instead.
Gill led India to victory over Bangladesh in their opening match, scoring an unbeaten 101. Speaking about the match against Pakistan, Gill said, “It doesn’t change anything for us honestly. We play every match to win, and this is no different for us. This is how we prepare for any match that we play. So, that’s how we are going to prepare for this one as well.”
The India-Pakistan clashes always draw huge TV ratings and are a fan favorite, with streets deserted in both countries as millions tune in. Gill acknowledged the excitement but emphasized that his team’s approach remains the same.
“There is a long history of India-Pakistan, and it’s a very exciting contest when both teams play. Everyone enjoys watching it. If so many people are getting happiness in watching this match, then who are we to say under-hype or over-hype?” Gill said.
The last encounter between the two teams was at the 2023 World Cup in Ahmedabad, where India triumphed by seven wickets. A win for India on Sunday would put them on the path to the semi-finals, while Pakistan, who are currently at the bottom of Group A after losing to New Zealand, must win to stay in contention.
India’s victory would also place them just behind New Zealand, who currently lead Group A with a better run rate.
