Bahrain’s maritime security patrols announced seizing over 110 kilograms of shrimp caught illegally in the Kingdom’s waters.

In a statement, the Coast Guard command confirmed that these shrimps were freshly caught, disregarding the ongoing six-month ban on shrimping, which remains in effect until the end of this month, starting on February 1.

The illegal catch was confiscated from the Damistan region. Legal actions have been initiated against the suspects involved in this unlawful activity, and they have been referred to the Public Prosecution for further legal measures.

The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries have collectively implemented a comprehensive shrimping ban to protect their shared marine resources and promote sustainable fishing practises. In Bahrain, a six-month ban on shrimp fishing is enforced annually to regulate and control the harvesting of shrimp.

The ban typically starts on February 1 and continues until July 31. During this period, it is prohibited to catch, trade, or sell shrimp in Bahraini waters. These measures aim to safeguard shrimp populations and maintain the ecological balance of marine ecosystems.
