Smashes fly at GPIC Open

Sixth seeded Frank Li got through his quarterfinal in the men’s singles with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Sundara Ram in the latest matches of the 29th GPIC Open Tennis Championships at the Bahrain Tennis Club premises in Juffair. 

Li was the only seed to make it through to the semi-finals as top seed Abdul Rahman Showaiter was eliminated by giant-killer Gilberto Sino Cruz 6-3, 6-4 and third seed Khalid Nass lost out 6-1, 6-0 to Edward David.

In the other match of the quarter finals,unseeded Sayyar Mohammed was a 6-3, 7-6(3) 

winner over fellow unseeded player Vineeth Nair. In the quarterfinals of the men’s singles +45 category, top seed Cassius Pereira was a 6-2, 6-4 winner over Gerry Toledo and fourth seed Ronald Anacin beat Jay Johnson 6-0, 6-1. 

Sixth seed Norman Abastillas was an easy 6-0, 6-1 winner over Alberto Quintana and eighth seed Stalin Joseph won in straight sets 6-4, 6-3 against Robert Timmers.

The men’s super doubles starts on Sunday headed by the top two seeds Hassan and Karim Abdulnabi and Abdulrahman and Ahmed Janahi and other pairs include Yousif Qaed and Rashid Obaidly, Abdul Rahman Shehab and Mohammed Abdul Latif, Bader Abdul A’al and Antonio Catito amd Nader and Mohammed Abdul A’al.

Men’s +45 Doubles starts next Wednesday and is headed by top seeds Stalin Joseph and Uday Shanbhag and Kamal and Ali Khonji and the Men’s Super Singles next Thursday.

Matches start every day from 6pm except on Friday, when none are scheduled.
