Kuwait to host third GCC Olympics

Kuwait was given the go-ahead to host the third edition of the GCC Olympics in 2019, the Executive Office announced yesterday following the 85th GCC National Olympic Committees Presidents’ Executive Office meeting in Doha. The executive office also decided to form a committee tasked at implementing the initiative of Supreme Council for Youth and Sports chairman and Bahrain Olympic Committee president HH Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa for sport disputes.

Representatives of national GCC Olympic Committees were requested to submit its candidates for this panel by November 19 before official workshops are conducted from December 12 in Bahrain to discuss the working mechanism of the sport dispute committee.

Other decisions saw Oman bagging the rights to host the Third GCC Beach Games in the first quarter of 2017, and following up the UAE’s preparations to organise the 2016 First GCC Junior Games from September 15 to 21.

The office also agreed to have four new GCC Sport Organising Committees for archery, winter sports, motor sports and wrestling.

Kuwait’s proposal to organise a Cultural Olympics for the GCC countries was accepted, while requests from Yemen and Iraq to join the GCC athletics competitions were rejected due to their ineligibility based on subject 25 of the GCC statute.

Yesterday’s meeting was chaired by Qatari Olympic Committee General Secretary Dr Thani Abdulrahman Al Kuwari.

Attending this meeting from the Bahrain side were Bahrain Olympic Committee General Secretary Abdulrahman Askar, as well as Fajer Jassim and Mohammed Al Zayed from International Affairs.
