Indian woman who killed hubby gets life-term in Bahrain

An Indian man who was stabbed 72 times and killed by his wife in Bahrain was apparently working at a jewellery shop in Manama.

A 27-year-old Indian woman accused of killing her husband was handed life sentence on Thursday. She broke into tears for almost 30 minutes in the courtroom after officers interpreted the verdict to her.

The couple are natives of Tiruchirappalli, from the south Indian state of Tamil Nadu.

The woman reportedly murdered 40-year-old Siraj Al Din Ebrahim after she fell in love with another man living abroad. The forensic doctor’s report showed that the man died from 74 wounds across his body, ranging between human bites and knife injuries.

The woman initially told the prosecutors that her husband was upset by financial problems and ‘killed himself’ by stabbing himself in the neck, chest and abdomen. However, she was arrested after her 5-year-old daughter told police that she saw her mother stabbing her father, adding that they fought everyday.

It is said that the man begged his wife to stop the attack, but she killed him by slitting his neck. The Public Prosecutor charged the defendant with premeditated murder based on the daughter’s statement, the forensic doctor’s report and the evidences gathered from the scene, including the knife, which was used to commit the crime.

The woman deliberately made some cuts on her body to manipulate the police into believing that she had attempted to prevent her husband from killing himself. However, the Public Prosecution ruled out her statements, saying it was impossible for someone to hurt himself in this manner to commit suicide.

According to an earlier report in Bahrain’s Arabic language daily ‘Al Wasat’  the woman told the court that she married the man, a former cricketer, in 2004 and had two children from him. They later came to Bahrain, where he worked at a jewellery shop for BD450 and decided to borrow BD17,000 to build a house in India.

“The woman said her husband started to borrow more and that they began to have severe financial problems, which forced them to move to live in a room in a sharing apartment. She said financial difficulties started to cause marital problems,” the paper said.
