Earthquake: NSMS did not record any unusual tremors
No earthquake related tremors were recorded by the nation’s Seismograph station, authorities stated.
Despite recent reports that residents felt tremors in parts of Bahrain, nothing unusual was recorded by the recently launched National Seismic Monitoring Station (NSMS), the Ministry of Transportation Meteorological Directorate confirmed.
Speaking to DT News, the Acting Director of Meteorology Directorate Adel Daham stressed that the Island was safe from earthquakes at the moment. He noted that Bahrain’s geographical position in ‘Zone 0’, which many interpret that the risk of earthquake is very low, also reaffirmed Bahrain’s relative safety. He said that the 7.5 magnitude earthquake that shook Pakistan, Afghanistan and India earlier this week had no effect on the Gulf.
“It was a 7.5 magnitude earthquake but we have not been affected by it in any way. We did not get any such reports from our station or from the residents. There are many large buildings in Bahrain but none of them reported any tremors. We have also checked with our counterparts in United Arab Emirates (UAE) and they have also said that no such activities were noted in the Gulf,” he said.
He assured the public that there was nothing to worry about. “There is no indication of an earthquake in the Middle East. As a matter of fact, the earthquake in Pakistan, Afghanistan and India has completely subsided. If there is at all a cause for worry, we will inform the public by issuing a warning. At the moment, we have nothing to worry about,”
he said. NSMS was inaugurated in May this year to monitor earthquakes around the world. Alerting on the possibility for disaster in case of earthquakes near the Bushehr nuclear plant in Iran is one of the top priorities of the Seismograph station.
“The station is functioning perfectly, it is providing us with the information that is expected of it, we are happy with its performance. We are always collaborating with the UAE who are great help to us,” Daham added.
