France praises Bahrain's decision to use alternative sanctions

France's Ambassador to Bahrain Jérôme Cauchard has welcomed Bahrain's decision to implement alternative sanctions.

Alternative procedures can bring new answers to society, the diplomat told a regional symposium "Challenges and Prospects for Effective Implementation of Alternative Measures and Punishments Between International Standards and National Experiences".

The two-day virtual symposium, organized by the Institute for Judicial and Legal Studies, was held under the patronage of Ali bin Fadhul Al Buainain, Attorney General, and in partnership with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, and in coordination with the French embassy in Bahrain.

Ambassador Cauchard stressed the importance of the symposium topic related to criminal justice and the significance of exchanging experiences in an area that now integrates new technologies for monitoring and training people benefiting from alternative sanctions.

The ambassador appreciated the contribution of the Bahraini Ministries of Justice and Interior to the symposium, and pointed out that France has long experience in effective alternatives.

Since 1875, France has passed innovative laws on alternatives, such as conditional provisions, social services and training. These different approaches aim to reduce the risk of recidivism and the number of broken families, while responding to the problems of prison overcrowding.

Two French experts, Lisa Ehoke: sentence execution judge at the Judicial Tribunal of Rouen and Daniel Danglades officer at the Pole of Development of Measures at the Department of Sentence Courses of the Sub-Directorate of Integration and Probation of the Directorate of Penitentiary Administration of the Ministry of Justice, illustrated through their participation the French experience and expertise.

They, and another French participant, Émilie Désormière, Regional Justice Cooperation Officer, contributed through their insightful and relevant interventions to the enrichment of this meeting that brought together representatives from several Arab countries.
