“Non-hostile” fire kills sailor of US Navy in port in Bahrain

Manama

---

A sailor of the US Navy was killed on Sunday in a non-hostile fire related injury while the ship was in port at Naval Support Activity Bahrain. According to sources, he was assigned to USS Gladiator (MCM 11).

CDR Kevin Stephens, U.S. Navy Force Public Affairs Officer, U.S. Naval Forces Central Command/U.S. Fifth Fleet/Combined Maritime Forces, told DT News that investigation into the circumstances of the death was ongoing. However, he said that there were no indications of foul play.

The ship’s personnel immediately responded to the scene and the sailor was transported to a nearby hospital where the service member was pronounced dead at approximately 5.20 a.m., he added.

“In accordance with the Department of Defence policy, the identity of the sailor will be released 24 hours following notification of family members,” he said, adding that the name of the sailor will most probably be revealed today. USS Gladiator is an Avenger-class mine countermeasures ship forward deployed to Bahrain, which is home to US Naval Forces Central Command and United States Fifth Fleet.
