New Delhi: Following conversations with US President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in France, Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated that India and the US have achieved ‘significant progress’ in bilateral trade negotiations.

Modi stated that both leaders decided to go forward with efforts to reach a ‘balanced and commercially meaningful’ trade agreement as soon as possible, reflecting greater momentum in talks aimed at strengthening economic ties between the two countries.

Trump also expressed optimism following the meeting, saying the two countries were ‘very close’ to completing a trade agreement. Tariffs, market access, and broader economic cooperation were all discussed, with both sides hoping to settle unresolved issues that have delayed negotiations in the past few months.

Beyond trade, in light of recent maritime incidents, Modi expressed worries over the security of Indian seafarers working in the Gulf. Trump pledged to sustain U.S. support for India's security interests while expressing sympathy for the deaths of Indian sailors. The presidents further spoke about ongoing diplomatic efforts with Iran and the state of affairs in West Asia.

Despite recent disagreements over trade and regional concerns, the interaction, which was the first in-person meeting between Modi and Trump since previous high-level engagements, demonstrated both governments' dedication to strengthening the strategic partnership between India and the United States.
