Al Zain dominates in swimming events

Abdulrahman Kanoo International School clinched the girls section swimming gold medal at the Bahrain Swimming Association premises in Isa Town at the ongoing 2015 School Mini Olympics.

The Salmabad-based private school dominated most of the girls division competitions in both the primary and intermediate stages, as Al Zain Tariq completed the 200m freestyle for the primary stage students in first position.

She was followed by Ala’a Adel and Zaynab Qaheri, both of Abdulrahman Kanoo International School in second and third places respectively.

In the primary stage 50m backstroke event, Cassandra Holman of the British School came on top after a close challenge from Abdulrahman Kanoo’s Al Zain and Ala’a, who were respective silver and bronze winners.

The 50m breaststroke also featured stiff competition as Al Zain Tariq claimed her second gold medal of the day, beating the Adel sisters Ala’a and Aya who had to settle for second and third places.

Al Zain made it three late on in the 50m butterfly, where she raced to victory against Ala’a, who took the silver, while the bronze went to Zaynab.

There was no stopping Al Zain, who completed her medal haul of the day, taking home the 100m freestyle gold following a well-contested affair with Cassandra who claimed the silver. Ala’a rounded off the podium taking the bronze medal.

There were five more events in the intermediate stage, as Aina Greenway bagged double gold medals in the 50m backstroke and 50m breaststroke.

The British School student completed the 50m backstroke event first against silver medalist Fatma Mohammed of Arad School and bronze medal winner Shaikha Tareq of Zanobia School.

Later on, Aina put in another solid performance to edge another British School rival Misha Mahendru who settled for silver.

In another closely-contested race, Saijia Sollberger of the British School raced to victory in the 100m, finishing ahead of Aina, who came second.

Other competitions saw Suha Faiz picked up a gold in the 50m freestyle, while Abdulrahman Kanoo International School topped the 50m relay against second-placer Al Hekma International School.

Meanwhile, the concluding day of action is set for today with the finals of the athletics, swimming, football and basketball.

The 2015 School Mini Olympics is organised by the Bahrain Olympic Committee (BOC) in cooperation with the Education Ministry and national sports associations.

It aims to spread and promote the values and principles of the Olympic among government and private schools in the Kingdom, and motivate them to practice sports activities and follow a healthy life style.
