Fraud: Asian’s sentence upheld

An Asian national who swindled a person of BD700 had his one-year-jail term upheld. The accused reportedly embezzled the amount from his victim after posing as a salesman serving in a construction company.
The victim wanted to design and fix gymnasium in his house, and the accused offered to it.They agreed on a total fee of BD2400, and the victim handed the accused a down payment of BD700.But days passed and no work was done, and the victim went to the company to enquire.
"As I entered the company premises, some people there told me it has been closed for the past two years," the victim told prosecutors. When he contacted the accused, he reportedly replied that he was working as a freelancer after the company shut down. The Public Prosecution charged him with forgery and deception.
He was sentenced by the High Criminal Court to one year in jail, and his appeal against the conviction was rejected by the High Criminal Appeals Court. He will be deported once he completes his jail term.
