Cleaning drive to change face of old Manama Souq

Manama : The Capital Municipality Secretariat launched recently a cleaning campaign at Bab Al Bahrain Street at the old market area under the slogan “No random posters.” More than 350 kg of posters were removed in the campaign in the presence of Director General of the Capital Municipality Secretariat, Sheikh Mohammed bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, the Chairman of the Secretariat Board, Mohammad Ali Al-Khuzai, and Matthews Hellweg, the General Manager of Ramada Hotel in Bahrain.

Around 50 employees of the hotel and administrators participated in the campaign.

On the occasion, Sheikh Mohammed appreciated the initiatives of private and civil society institutions in supporting these programmes that enhance the beauty and cleanliness of the environment.

The campaign is as part of the ongoing efforts by the Capital Secretariat to curb the practice of sticking random posters and graffiti in the old Manama Souq area, where business activities are in full swing. Besides, many tourists visit the place, as it is adjacent to Bab Al Bahrain.

Stressing on the need to implement the provisions of advertisement law stipulated by Law No. 14 of 1993 on dealing with the offending ads, Sheikh Mohammed explained that the law cleared the responsibility of the Capital Municipality of any claim for any damage caused to ads or devices or any other equipment when performing the removal.

He also urged to intensify efforts to catch the violators and companies, and slap penalties prescribed by law.

The campaign team leader, Jameel Al Mubarak explained that the team had been divided into three groups. One group will talk with companies and shop owners and educated them on the need to abide by the law to maintain public hygiene and keep civilized image of the market.

Another group is focusing on removing all the posters from the walls and the third group is engaged in cleaning the area.

The public can register complaints through the hotline number: 80001855 or by contacting complaints officer during working hours on 17221415, or through www.municipality.gov.com.
