A transport allowance frozen at BD20 since 2002 should be tripled to BD60 to help government workers cope with rising fuel and vehicle costs, MP Mohammed Al Rifai has proposed.

His proposal would give government employees and military and security personnel an additional BD40 a month for commuting.

Al Rifai said the current allowance had failed to keep pace with spending on petrol, servicing, repairs and spare parts.

The proposal covers civilian government staff and military and security personnel under their respective rules, while existing allowances and benefits would remain unchanged.

His call comes after petrol prices rose on October 2, with Jayyid 91 reaching 235 fils a litre and Mumtaz 95 277 fils.

Al Rifai said the additional payment would not be considered a basic salary increase but would help cover commuting costs, particularly for employees without government transport. He also called for the allowance to be reviewed regularly so it keeps pace with rising travel costs.
