Education Minister highlights Bahrain’s use of technology and AI in education and discusses cooperation with UNESCO and Microsoft in Paris.
Minister of Education, Dr. Mohammed bin Mubarak Juma, presented the Kingdom’s experience in integrating technology and artificial intelligence (AI) into education during a ministerial session at UNESCO headquarters in Paris.
Speaking as part of Digital Week, Dr. Juma discussed different models for using technology in education, highlighting their benefits and challenges. He stressed the importance of maintaining a balance between digital tools and traditional classroom practices while ensuring that technology supports, rather than undermines, the educational process.
The minister reviewed several programmes and initiatives implemented by Bahrain’s Ministry of Education using technology and AI. He said these efforts have contributed to improving student performance and strengthening teacher training. He also outlined key considerations for making AI a core part of education while avoiding unintended outcomes.
Dr. Juma concluded his presentation with recommendations focused on protecting the right to education for all in an era of rapid technological and AI development.
On the sidelines of the event, the minister met Professor Qun Chen, UNESCO Assistant Director General for Education, to discuss strengthening cooperation between Bahrain’s Ministry of Education and UNESCO through educational initiatives.
Discussions included the UNESCO King Hamad Bin Isa Al Khalifa Prize for the Use of Information and Communication Technologies in Education. Dr. Juma also met UNESCO officials, including Dr. Sobhi Tawil, Director of the Future of Learning and Innovation Division, and Dr. Shafika Isaacs, Director of the prize.
The meetings covered arrangements for upcoming events and Bahrain’s programmes to integrate technology across education.
Dr. Juma also held discussions with senior Microsoft officials on training teachers to use AI in education and expanding the participation of Bahrain’s educational institutions in Microsoft’s technology incubator schools programme.
